Cool rinsing

So many of my clients come to me saying their ends are feeling dry, their color seems to be fading more quickly and they feel they arent reaping the full benefits of their conditioner. My sole suggestion? COLD WATER.

Most of us see the “cool” button on our blow dryers, and have no clue of its use. Some also know rising their face with cool water closes their pores…well, both of these can be tied to your hair, and its condition!

Warm showers, especially this time of year are amazing! However, weather and season changes dry us out, so adapting this habit is even more crucial.

Your new shower routine:

Shampoo your hair, as usual with warm water. (Remember, shampoos purpose is to cleanse your scalp, this is where you want to concentrate the product!)
The warm water helps break down the oils.

Next, with conditoner in hand..focus this solely on your ENDS. Applying conditoner near the scalp depleats volume, and creates a build up. With conditoner still in, go about the rest of your shower duties…when it comes time to rinse, cool down that water
and wash out that product. This will help close down the cuticle of your hair, and lock that amazing moisture into your locks. You’ll get more from your conditoner & color, and over time will help manage your “frizz”. Picture your hair cuticle like mini blinds, when your cuticle is open and ruffed up…..they’ll be like a fan blowing up the opposite direction of the blinds. Gross, eh? This is where the “cool” button on your dryer comes in handy as well. To complete your look after your blow out…cool down that air and direct that air down to make hair appear shiney, smooth and managable!

DYI Banana Hair Mask

I apologize for my lack of blog updates, what can I say..life has been BA-NAN-AS! Summer time is amazing, but make sure youre treating your skin & hair well…Take a few minutes, relax and give your locks a little lovee, naturally!

DIY BA-NAN-AS Hair Mask

Ingredients:

  • 1 banana
  • 1 egg
  • 3 tbspoons honey
  •  3 tbspoons milk
  • 5 tbspoons olive oil.

Directions:
Spread thru hair & leave on 15-30 mins. Rinse WELL.

Benefits:

  • Banana is rich in potassium, natural oils, carbohydrates and vitamins that helps in softening the hair and protects the hair’s natural elasticity preventing split ends and breakage.
  •  Eggs are rich in protein. Protein helps to make the hair follicle stronger. Stronger strands of hair are less likely to break.  Therefore, you’ll have fewer split ends. In addition to enhancing resistance to  breakage
  • Honey is a humectant, which means that it holds on to water molecules. It provides moisture and keeps our cuticles feeling smoother, closed and manageable.
  • Milk is a beautiful natural conditioner. Hair is made of proteins, which are necessary for tissue growth and repair.
    There are two types of protein in milk, casein and whey which are used to prevent hair loss, strengthen hair and help it grow faster.
  • Olive oil is rich and its moisturizing properties make it ideal for use on your hair. It helps eliminate split ends, and adds more manageability, softness and shine!

DYI Lemon Salt Scrub

With glorious SPRINGTIME upon us..lets scrub away all the harshness from winter with a soothing, clean body scrub! Glowing skin is THE look of spring time & with this DIY recipe being one of the easiest I have made…there’s no excuse not to throw together this gem and give your skin a little love!

Ingredients:

  • 5 tablespoons of Sea Salt
  • Olive Oil (enough to moisten the salt without an “oily” feel)
  • 1/2 of a fresh lemon-squeezed

Benefits:

Sea salt is used as the natural exfolient in this recipe. This will aid in removing dead skin and polishing the largest organ for your spring glow. The salt also acts as a soothing agent for those tired muscles and joints you’ve been working hard in the gym for the upcoming summer time season.;) Olive oil will replenish dry skin and natural hydrate and mositruize. The vitamin C in the lemon will leave your skin feeling fresh, clean and breathable!

With the smiles and sunshine this first week has shown, I’m convinced this year is going to be an AMAZING one. 🙂 Lets start this off right- healthy,  happy & FABULOUS! Ive been working hard doing research to share with you some great healthy must haves to ensure this year your hair & skin has never looked better…from the inside out!

A balanced diet is common sense for a healthy bod, but did you ever consider what you put in your body affects the health of your skin and hair? Fad diets, fast food binges and missing meals may seem sensible at the time..but an overall balanced diet of lean proteins, fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fish and low-fat dairy  will help keep your figure, energy level, skin and hair tip top. Why follow these guidelines? ..Because YOU DESERVE IT!

Top Ten Foods you will be incorporating in your diet for 2012

1. Dark Green Vegetables

An amazing source of Vitamin A and C which assist in producing SEBUM. Remember our favorite “gift” to give our hair? This is the gift that keeps on giving!

2. Fatty Fish like Salmon

Salmon is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, b 12 & iron, lacking this can result in a dry scalp and dull looking hair. These components aid in keeping your scalp healthy! Not a fish person? Get cozy with some flaxseed, you’ll need it. 🙂

3. Beans

remember our review of Biotin and how essential it is for our hair and skin health? Well, here’s a great source of it to add to your diet! Beans like lentils and kidney beans are chalk full of  iron, zinc, and biotin proteins!

4. Eggs

Oh, eggs…you wonder food, you! Not only can we apply egg topically (egg mask!) but incorporating more eggs into your diet is THE best source of protein you can find! It also is another great source of Biotin & vitamin B-12!

5. Nuts

Is there a more simple snack then packing some nuts in a to go bag? These amazing yummy treats are a great source of protein, selenium (a mineral for your hair) and most importantly for our hairs health…zinc. Lacking zinc does lead to hair shedding…eee! Get some walnut, cashew and almonds immediately! 🙂

6. Poultry

As most of us know, poultry is a great source of protein that your body can easily benefit from! These proteins offered from chicken and turkey will keep your hair, scalp and color fresh and strong!

7.  Oysters

Oysters are loaded with Zinc, which your hair LOVES! Dont feel the love for Oysters? Beef offers great zinc as well. 😉

8. Whole Grains

Whole grains are a great source of energy and keeping your tummy full, as well as zinc, vitamin B and iron! While shopping the bread and cereal isle, look for whole wheat!

9. Carrots

We’ve always heard carrots keep your eye sight sharp, which is a result of its high amounts of Vitamin A..but  that amazing vitamin also benefits your scalp! Healthy hair=healthy scalp. A yummy, easy snack!

10. Dairy

Last but not least…dairy. This one is an obvious source of calcium which is needed for healthy bones, skin & hair! Make sure youre getting in your milk, yogurt and cheese products! (in moderation, and if youre watching your waistline..lowfat ❤ )

Todays issue..Our LOVE of hot irons, and the effects on our locks..

Using heat to your hair everyday will eventually wear on your strands,  leaving them exposed and injured. Imagine that intense heat being one on one against your hair, unprotected! OUCH!!
