I have so many friends and clients asking how they can get healthier, fuller hair. It all “stems” from the simple notion..healthy scalp = healthy hair! The scalp is the root to healthy strands. Treat it right, and all will … Continue reading
My lovely little beauties..I apologize greatly for my lack of updates lately! Always having my laptop near by doesnt always guarantee a wifi and time alloted to make a blog post! The plus side of my many, many hours on the road? A wealth of ideas to blog about. Get ready dolls!
I figured to get back into the swing of things, it’d be appropriate to blog about my ROADTRIP MUST HAVES, since I seem to be a pro at it as of late. 🙂 This country is beyond beautiful, and I encourage all of you to seize any opportunity to see it! Beautiful..I’ll include a couple of my iPhone pictures from my latest trip at the end of my post. Enjoy! ❤
#1 Paul Mitchell Awapuhi Moisture Mist
I LOVE this product, and it’s been a favorite of mine since beauty school! They make it in an incredible travel size (which is a staple in my purse daily)! It helps to hydrate you skin, and hair. It resets make up and re activates styling products for the hair. It also smells incredible! Informative facts from Paul Mitchell Systems:
- Lactic acid and Hawaiian awapuhi provide deep moisture and enhanced shine.
- Spirulina and plankton extracts rich in amino acids and vitamins make hair soft, hydrated and silky smooth.
- Sodium PCA (a natural component of human skin) balances moisture.
#2 Kendra Dry Shampoo
I HATE the feeling of dirty hair..however days on the road sometimes call for a “refresher”! This is my all time FAVORITE dry shampoo. It eliminates oily and leaves your hair smelling “out of the shower”fresh! I la la loooove it! Also made in a travel size…must have. 🙂 Kenra.com Info!
- Instantly revives and refreshes hair – no water required
- Saves time and extends color or blow-outs by reducing the need to shampoo as frequently
- Keeps styles looking fresh and full by absorbing oil that can weigh hair down
#3 Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment
Theres nothing worse than chapped, sore lips! This is the cure all…worth the investment and an essential purse item, roadtrip or not. Its a hydrating treatment that helps nourish, protect and plump lips. It also helps from those UV road rays 😉
Did you know that a tube of Maybelline’s Great Lash Mascara is sold every 1.7 seconds somewhere in the world? I suppose its univeral..Us ladies LOVE great lashes.
The Collins English Dictionary defines mascara as “a cosmetic substance for darkening, coloring, and thickening the eyelashes, applied with a brush or rod.” As we all know mascara is used to darken, thicken, lengthen, and/or define eyelashes and all are made up of pigments, oils, waxes, and preservatives.
Did you know mascara can be documented in history as far back as 400 BC in ancient Egypt? They used a substance called Kohl (charcoal or soot, crocodile stool, honey, and water was added to keep the kohl from running) was applied to darken the eyes, eye brows and eye lashes and was believed to ward off evil spirits and protect the souls of men and women. Crazy, right? Us girls now adays just want luscious lashes!
As you know from a previous MMM: Self Life , mascara is the one cosmetic in our make up bag we MUST replace often, and be cautious of it’s ability to spread bacteria! It is also, in my opinion, one of THE most important items a gal can posses. Batting those lashes, and feeling confident in the enhancement of our eyes can make such a difference! There are days when all of us girls love to take a day off of our usual make up routine, but for me mascara and gloss are an obvious staple.
We all have our opinions on which wands, formulas and price points work best for us. Are more expensive products better? Does the wand REALLY make a difference? Do we want to lengthen, volumize or have water proof? Its all in our own preference..and us girls, we all need options! I’m going to list a couple of my personal faves..but I’d LOVE to hear any of your input as well! 🙂
My favorite (and obviously many others) go to drug store mascara:
I love that this wand is bendable and allows me to customize my preference for application. My reusable wands fit perfectly in the tube for on location work! I use the waterproof formula personally for my day to day looks and think its a great staple for a even better price. 🙂
The most popular of the higher priced Mascaras:
I do LOVE DiorShow. At $24.50 a tube, its a little more of an investment…but its obvious most people are very satisfied with this purchase. Years ago when I was employed by Sephora, this was one of our most popular products! It really does lenghten and volumize. LOVE 🙂
My most recent FAVE:
Urban Decay’s Curling Mascara is $20 a tube, but Ive been playing around with it lately..and have been pretty impressed. I actually have it on now, and feel a great bend to my lashes, and a great even coating! With some mascaras I feel my lashes get dried out, and this one actually has shea butter in its formula to keep lashes moisturized! Two thumbs up. 🙂
The mascara next on my “to try” list:
MACs Opulash..Ive heard awesome stuff about this product that MAC describes as “uperlative style & state-of-the-art science merge. A new formula in a more saturated intense black with extra-volumization, expansion & curl delivered dramatically with our most bodacious brush yet. Lasts 15 hours!” Sign me up! At $15 a tube I cant wait!
What are your faves? Who out there has experimented with colored mascaras?
To batting those pretty peepers,
I know us little ladies always want to be putting our BEST FACE FORWARD, and there’s a certain confidence that comes along with starting your day in your most couture make up..however in this economy, even the greatest fashionistas are having the find amazing alternatives that fit not only our color shades but espcially in our budgets! These are my personal “must have” drug store products you’ll never see my kit without. (and that will most definietly be joining me on my ridiculously awesome adevnture this weekend..stay posted for details!)
This has been a product my Mom has sworn by for over 30 years…and she’s living proof it works well and is beneficial to our skin! (Barely has a noticable wrinkle to date!) It removes eye make up, (including waterproof mascara) and deposits amazing mositure into that super sensitive eye area skin. Its soap-less, and is almost the texture of vasaline (but won’t clog your pores like vasaline has known to do). Apply to the eye area, and remove with a soft facial tissue or round cotton. I seriously intend on using this product for the rest of my life!
I remember many moons ago while in cosmetology school, we were doing an in depth class on make up..and this product was spotlighted. I have had it in my make up kit every since..I find myself straying away to try the “latest and greatest” but always find myself returning to my trusty ColorStay! It has a broad selection of colors, easy application, great lasting coverage through the day (even for my combination skin) and it photographs well! I even included it in my review of FOUNDATIONS in my MMM a few weeks back. 🙂
Another great Mama-passed down secret that I adore! This creamy concealer goes on smooth and has coverage that is very comparable to much more expensive products! It lasts forever and I use it daily! 🙂
Good ole trusty basic mascara that almost every make up bag find a home in. Why? Because it delivers great results for an unbeatable price! I love that the wand is so basic, and is able to bend to make application costomized to my needs. With the SHELF LIFE (or lack of) for mascara, this bargin makes even more sense. I always go for Blackest Black in waterproof for my every day lashes. 🙂
For my personal daily, dramatic eye look my “go to” is always a blacker than black liner. Ive tried MANY liquid liners (even more expensive brands) only to be disappointed. I look for true, trusty color that stays in place and has an easy application. This is the only liner Ive continually been in love with!
I hope these suggestions help! I’d LOVE to know what any of your budget make up must haves are..gotta help one another out in these times.
To being kind AND budget friendly,
Make up 101 continues with the most vital review – make up shelf life and when is the right time to dispose of old products.
All us ladies have a little stash of “just in case” make up. Colors we bought that we thought were fab, came home, HATED but think could work for some occasion. (Really?) That foundation that we discovered once we got home is hideously mismatched and no where near our shade, but think maybe we’ll get that tan sometime soon or are just plain out too lazy to return…and OF COURSE- Mascara that we swear has that last glob of lengthening and volume for our lashes (and even though we have 3 fresh tubes).. so we stash that destined lash clump in a drawer for a rainy day. These behaviors not only lead to clutter and hoarding space for our fresh new beauty finds, but more importantly leads to BACTERIA!
Here’s a run down of make up life’s timelines!
*This isnt pushing you to go out and purchase all new make up..however this is a precaution to save your face from bad, icky, dangerous situations! (These are estimations…I say better safe than sorry. Be cautious!)
Concealer: Up to 12 months
Powder: 2 years
Eyeshadow: Up to 3 years
Foundation: Water Based-12 months Oil Based-18 months
Mascara: 4 MONTHS. (This product is THE biggest breeding ground for bacteria. To prolong shelf life do not pump wand in and out, this exposes it to excess open air. NEVER SHARE THIS PRODUCT WITH ANYONE!)
Liners (eye and lip): 3 years. Sharpen regularly!
Lipstick: 1-4 years. Once its dried up-throw it out. Prolong the life by storing in the fridge. 🙂
Brushes: For personal use, wash every 2-3 months in a mild detergent.
Sponges: For person use, wash weekly and dispose of monthly.
I know it’s hard to part with beauty essentials we paid good money for, but gals..its worth the investment to keep our faces clean and protected.
Heres to staying FRESH,
Make up 101 continues after PRIMERS comes FOUNDATIONS.
What is foundation? What kind is right for you? How do you pick the correct shade?
Foundation is used to even out skin tone and conceal blemishes. There are countless different options when it comes to selection, and picking the right option for you, from color to tone, aplication method to coverage is endless.
Foundation and “face painting” have been recorded as early as the old testament and Max Factor’s “PanCake” was the first commercially available foundation in 1937. Women have always desired for a flawless complection!
Foundation classifications come in Warm, Neutral, or Cool. The “cosmetic pallete” calls for Yellow as always Warm, Blue as always Cool, and Red as either Neutral (Primary), Warm (Orange) or Cool (Blue-Red). It is important to understand a person’s skin tone, undertone and what pigments are wanting to be toned. The extent of the coverage can be gauged by Sheer, Light, Medium and full. (sheer being most transparent, light being 13-18% pigment, medium being 18-23% pigment and full being 35-50% pigment) and bases are classified by Oil and emollient, Oil-based shakers, Alcohol based, Powder-based, Mineral makeup, Water-based & Silicone-based.
PHEWWWW, thats a lot of foundation facts! Now lets apply that knowledge.
According to Targetwoman.com , here’s some great tips on FOUNDATIONS. 🙂
- If you have an oily skin go in for oil-free or oil-control foundation. On
the other hand if you have dry skin shop for moisturizing foundations. If you
have combination of oily and dry skin, determine the most type prevalent in your
skin and purchase a foundation accordingly. Cream-to-powder based foundation
work best for combination skin.Once and for all its over. Ok?
- Select a foundation that seems close to your natural skin tone. Yellow based
foundations look most natural on all skin types. However if you are very fair,
try pink or a cooler shade. Women make a primary mistake of choosing a
foundation that is too light for their skin in the hope of appearing whiter or
fairer. This ends up looking ashy. You can pick up make foundations in colors
ranging from cream and ivory to peach and darker. Test a foundation color by
applying a thin line of color to the jaw line. This will allow you to compare
color to the skin on the face as well as the neck to avoid any obvious
differences. The color should blend perfectly with your skin tone.Once and for
all its over.
- The vital makeup foundation tip is to blend it well. Ensure that your face
and neck appear the same color and the foundation has been well blended near the
hairline and the jaw line.
Applying makeup foundation
Foundation has to be spread well on the skin to avoid spots and streaks. Liquid foundation can be applied and
blended with a sponge. Apply dots of foundation on your cheeks, chin, forehead and tip of the nose with a makeup sponge or the tips of your fingers. Do not be afraid to experiment with colors and textures. You can then discover what works
best for you. You can choose a foundation with sun block. Apply concealer under your eyes if you need to camouflage dark circles or baggy eyelids. You can blot your face with a tissue to seal the foundation as well as remove any excess. Set
your makeup foundation with loose powder and you can all set for the rest of your makeup!

to flawless skin and beauty in all shades,
Make up basics..Lets start at SQUARE ONE.
Primers: What are they? What is their purpose? Benefits? When are they applied? Brands?
A primer is your first step in application for a flawless foundation coverage. It is designed for smoothing out fine lines and insuring the longevity of your wear. It prepares the canvas (your face) for the application of cosmetics and allows products to go on more evenly, showcases pigments more vividly and adheres make up to last longer throughout the day. Many makeup primers cover open pores, oily skin, facial blemishes, age spots, discolorations and even scars.
Some primers contain waxes, polymers, and silicone. These substances can form a bond with other cosmetics, causing the cosmetics to have more longevity than they would otherwise. There are foundation primers, eye shadow primers, and lip color primers. I use ALL 3 primers in my daily make up routine. It guarantees I get maximum coverage, pigments and use from all my products.
The HD Primer comes in 6 color-correcting shades and one transparent shade to correct skin imperfections. The colored pigments are absorbed by the skin for an invisible correction.
An eye shadow primer that preps, brightens, and provides all-day wear.
Primer potions glide effortlessly onto the skin providing the ultimate eye prep for smoother, more vibrant shadow and all-day, creaseless wear. The original formula disappears completely when applied—ideal for the purist who wants a straightforward primer. I get THE brightest pigments when I first prep with this Urban Decay gem. LOVE it. 🙂
