To singing the song your heart beats for,
There’s always those special events where creatively “thinking outside of the box” is encouraged, and I’ m always up for the challenge!
Every February there is a Masquerade themed party thrown at the famous Playboy Mansion, and I was lucky enough to be given a “golden ticket” 😉
As a makeup artist, I felt it would be a shame buying a mask to cover my face when I could recreate one with my awesome makeup products, and experiment with fun accents..this was my final look:
I decided on a peacock color theme which I felt would go well with my all black attire.
- Makeup Forever primer
- Ben Nye foundation. This look & event called for a heavy coverage, long lasting, flawless foundation. Worked flawlessly!
- Cover XF- used as a concealer
- MAC Paint Pot in Soft Ochre applied all around the eye area to prime for the mask look.
- Palladio Rice Powder to set
- Benefit pigment in-Pistachio
- Urban Decay-Zephyr, Midnight Cowgirl, HiJack, Blue Bus, Baked& Creep
- NYX-Bright Green& Irises
- MAC Fluidline
- DUO eyelash glue- Feather lashes & strip lashes applied (on top & bottom) as well as 2 loose peacock feathers to each side & rhinestones.
- MAC Blunt to contour
- MAC Pinch Me Blush
- MAC Shell for highlight
(Me, of course having a DANCE PARTY in my room while getting ready…one of my favorite parts of a night out!)

Hair and Make up:
Make up 101 continues with the most vital review – make up shelf life and when is the right time to dispose of old products.
All us ladies have a little stash of “just in case” make up. Colors we bought that we thought were fab, came home, HATED but think could work for some occasion. (Really?) That foundation that we discovered once we got home is hideously mismatched and no where near our shade, but think maybe we’ll get that tan sometime soon or are just plain out too lazy to return…and OF COURSE- Mascara that we swear has that last glob of lengthening and volume for our lashes (and even though we have 3 fresh tubes).. so we stash that destined lash clump in a drawer for a rainy day. These behaviors not only lead to clutter and hoarding space for our fresh new beauty finds, but more importantly leads to BACTERIA!
Here’s a run down of make up life’s timelines!
*This isnt pushing you to go out and purchase all new make up..however this is a precaution to save your face from bad, icky, dangerous situations! (These are estimations…I say better safe than sorry. Be cautious!)
Concealer: Up to 12 months
Powder: 2 years
Eyeshadow: Up to 3 years
Foundation: Water Based-12 months Oil Based-18 months
Mascara: 4 MONTHS. (This product is THE biggest breeding ground for bacteria. To prolong shelf life do not pump wand in and out, this exposes it to excess open air. NEVER SHARE THIS PRODUCT WITH ANYONE!)
Liners (eye and lip): 3 years. Sharpen regularly!
Lipstick: 1-4 years. Once its dried up-throw it out. Prolong the life by storing in the fridge. 🙂
Brushes: For personal use, wash every 2-3 months in a mild detergent.
Sponges: For person use, wash weekly and dispose of monthly.
I know it’s hard to part with beauty essentials we paid good money for, but gals..its worth the investment to keep our faces clean and protected.
Heres to staying FRESH,
Make up 101 continues after PRIMERS comes FOUNDATIONS.
What is foundation? What kind is right for you? How do you pick the correct shade?
Foundation is used to even out skin tone and conceal blemishes. There are countless different options when it comes to selection, and picking the right option for you, from color to tone, aplication method to coverage is endless.
Foundation and “face painting” have been recorded as early as the old testament and Max Factor’s “PanCake” was the first commercially available foundation in 1937. Women have always desired for a flawless complection!
Foundation classifications come in Warm, Neutral, or Cool. The “cosmetic pallete” calls for Yellow as always Warm, Blue as always Cool, and Red as either Neutral (Primary), Warm (Orange) or Cool (Blue-Red). It is important to understand a person’s skin tone, undertone and what pigments are wanting to be toned. The extent of the coverage can be gauged by Sheer, Light, Medium and full. (sheer being most transparent, light being 13-18% pigment, medium being 18-23% pigment and full being 35-50% pigment) and bases are classified by Oil and emollient, Oil-based shakers, Alcohol based, Powder-based, Mineral makeup, Water-based & Silicone-based.
PHEWWWW, thats a lot of foundation facts! Now lets apply that knowledge.
According to Targetwoman.com , here’s some great tips on FOUNDATIONS. 🙂
- If you have an oily skin go in for oil-free or oil-control foundation. On
the other hand if you have dry skin shop for moisturizing foundations. If you
have combination of oily and dry skin, determine the most type prevalent in your
skin and purchase a foundation accordingly. Cream-to-powder based foundation
work best for combination skin.Once and for all its over. Ok?
- Select a foundation that seems close to your natural skin tone. Yellow based
foundations look most natural on all skin types. However if you are very fair,
try pink or a cooler shade. Women make a primary mistake of choosing a
foundation that is too light for their skin in the hope of appearing whiter or
fairer. This ends up looking ashy. You can pick up make foundations in colors
ranging from cream and ivory to peach and darker. Test a foundation color by
applying a thin line of color to the jaw line. This will allow you to compare
color to the skin on the face as well as the neck to avoid any obvious
differences. The color should blend perfectly with your skin tone.Once and for
all its over.
- The vital makeup foundation tip is to blend it well. Ensure that your face
and neck appear the same color and the foundation has been well blended near the
hairline and the jaw line.
Applying makeup foundation
Foundation has to be spread well on the skin to avoid spots and streaks. Liquid foundation can be applied and
blended with a sponge. Apply dots of foundation on your cheeks, chin, forehead and tip of the nose with a makeup sponge or the tips of your fingers. Do not be afraid to experiment with colors and textures. You can then discover what works
best for you. You can choose a foundation with sun block. Apply concealer under your eyes if you need to camouflage dark circles or baggy eyelids. You can blot your face with a tissue to seal the foundation as well as remove any excess. Set
your makeup foundation with loose powder and you can all set for the rest of your makeup!

to flawless skin and beauty in all shades,
Make up basics..Lets start at SQUARE ONE.
Primers: What are they? What is their purpose? Benefits? When are they applied? Brands?
A primer is your first step in application for a flawless foundation coverage. It is designed for smoothing out fine lines and insuring the longevity of your wear. It prepares the canvas (your face) for the application of cosmetics and allows products to go on more evenly, showcases pigments more vividly and adheres make up to last longer throughout the day. Many makeup primers cover open pores, oily skin, facial blemishes, age spots, discolorations and even scars.
Some primers contain waxes, polymers, and silicone. These substances can form a bond with other cosmetics, causing the cosmetics to have more longevity than they would otherwise. There are foundation primers, eye shadow primers, and lip color primers. I use ALL 3 primers in my daily make up routine. It guarantees I get maximum coverage, pigments and use from all my products.
The HD Primer comes in 6 color-correcting shades and one transparent shade to correct skin imperfections. The colored pigments are absorbed by the skin for an invisible correction.
An eye shadow primer that preps, brightens, and provides all-day wear.
Primer potions glide effortlessly onto the skin providing the ultimate eye prep for smoother, more vibrant shadow and all-day, creaseless wear. The original formula disappears completely when applied—ideal for the purist who wants a straightforward primer. I get THE brightest pigments when I first prep with this Urban Decay gem. LOVE it. 🙂
